Abbey Falls is one of Coorg's most spectacular natural attractions, located about 8 km from Madikeri town. The waterfall drops approximately 70 feet through a narrow rocky gorge, surrounded by lush coffee plantations and spice estates. A hanging bridge over the gorge offers a thrilling view of the falls and the valley below. The walk from the parking area through the coffee estate is itself beautiful, with the scent of coffee blossoms in the air. The falls are at their most dramatic during and after the monsoon season when the volume of water is at its peak.

Raja's Seat — literally "the seat of the king" — is a beautifully maintained garden in the heart of Madikeri town, said to be the favourite spot of the Kodagu kings who would watch the magnificent sunsets from here. The garden sits on the edge of a cliff offering panoramic views of the misty Western Ghats valleys and the mist-cloaked coffee-covered hills below. Colourful flowers, manicured lawns and a small musical fountain add to the charm. The garden is at its most magical in the early morning when the valley is filled with mist.

Madikeri Fort has a rich and layered history dating back to the 17th century. Originally built by Mudduraja in mud, it was later renovated in stone by Tipu Sultan and further modified by the British after they annexed Coorg in 1834. Within the fort complex you'll find a curious mix of structures including an old Anglican church, a chapel, a prison and the palace building that now houses the district museum. The museum displays Kodava weapons, traditional costumes, royal artefacts and old photographs that bring the history of Coorg vividly to life.

The Omkareshwara Temple in Madikeri is a fascinating architectural curiosity — built in 1820 by the Kodagu ruler Lingarajendra, it uniquely blends Hindu, Islamic and Gothic European styles in a single structure. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a large ornamental tank in front where locals come for daily rituals. The Gothic turrets and Islamic domes sitting alongside Hindu shikhara-style towers create an unusual and striking visual. The serene atmosphere, the sound of temple bells and the reflections in the ornamental tank make it a tranquil spot to visit.

Coorg produces some of India's finest coffee — both Arabica and Robusta — along with pepper, cardamom, vanilla and other spices. A guided walk through a working coffee estate is one of the most rewarding experiences the region offers. You'll learn how coffee plants are cultivated, when and how the berries are harvested, and how the beans are processed from cherry to cup. Many estates also grow pepper vines climbing the shade trees, cardamom in the undergrowth and silver oak for canopy. The air in a coffee estate is intoxicating — especially during the blossoming season from February to March.

Dubare Elephant Camp, located on the banks of the Cauvery river about 28 km from Madikeri, is one of the most popular and unique experiences in Coorg. The Karnataka Forest Department runs a camp here where domesticated elephants receive daily care, training and veterinary attention. The morning programme lets visitors cross the river by boat and then interact closely with the elephants — feeding them sugarcane, assisting with their bath in the river and learning about each elephant's history from the mahouts. It's a genuinely heartwarming experience, especially for families and children.

Nisargadhama is a beautiful forested island in the middle of the Cauvery river, located about 29 km from Madikeri. The island is accessible via a rope bridge and is a lovely little nature retreat managed by the Forest Department. Inside, you'll find a small deer park with spotted deer roaming freely, dense groves of bamboo, tall teak trees, tree houses you can climb into, and a pleasant elephant joy ride. The sound of the river flowing around the island, the birdsong and the cool forest air make it a perfect half-day escape from the busy hill town.

The Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe, commonly known as the Golden Temple, is one of the most remarkable sights in South India. This large Tibetan Buddhist monastery is the seat of the Nyingma lineage in India and houses thousands of Tibetan refugees in a peaceful settlement. The main temple — Zangdog Palri — contains three enormous golden Buddha statues, the tallest standing 18 metres high. The walls are covered in intricate golden murals depicting Buddhist teachings and the ceilings are lavishly decorated. Walking through the monastery complex, with its prayer wheels, monks in saffron robes and the scent of incense, feels like stepping into Tibet.

Chiklihole Reservoir is a serene and relatively uncrowded destination about 16 km from Madikeri. The reservoir sits amid forested hills and coffee plantations, offering beautiful reflections of the surrounding greenery on calm mornings. The area is rich with birdlife — kingfishers, herons, cormorants and various forest birds can be spotted along the banks. The peaceful atmosphere and lack of large tourist crowds make it a welcome contrast to busier spots. The drive to the reservoir through coffee estates and forested roads is itself scenic.
