Ooty Lake is one of the most iconic attractions in the Nilgiris. Built in 1824 by John Sullivan, the first Collector of Coimbatore, this man-made lake stretches across 65 acres and is surrounded by dense eucalyptus and pine forests. The boathouse offers pedal boats, rowboats and motorboats, making it a favourite for families and couples alike. The lakeside promenade is perfect for a relaxed morning walk with cool misty air. A miniature train also runs along the lake, adding to the charm.

Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri Mountains and one of the most visited peaks in South India. The name means "big mountain" in Badaga. At 2,637 metres above sea level, the summit offers sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. On clear days, you can spot the plains of Coimbatore far below. A government-run telescope house at the top lets you zoom in on distant landmarks. The drive up through the winding ghat roads is itself scenic, passing through dense shola forests and tea estates.

Established in 1848 by the Marquis of Tweeddale, the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty is one of the most well-maintained gardens in India. Spread across 22 hectares on the slopes of Doddabetta, it is divided into six sections. The garden hosts over 1,000 species of plants, ferns, orchids and trees from across the world. Its most prized exhibit is a fossilised tree trunk estimated to be 20 million years old. The annual flower show held every May draws visitors from across India.

The Government Rose Garden in Ooty is the largest rose garden in India, maintained by the Horticultural Department of Tamil Nadu. Spread across 4 hectares on the slopes of Elk Hill, it houses over 20,000 varieties of roses including miniature, hybrid, tea and climbing roses. The garden is terraced in five levels with neat stone pathways. It is especially beautiful between March and May when most varieties are in full bloom.

The Nilgiris are home to some of India's finest teas. A visit to a working tea factory gives you a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the famous Blue Mountain tea goes from fresh green leaf to the cup. You'll walk through the entire process — withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and sorting. Most factory visits include a guided tour and a complimentary tasting session. The on-site tea shop lets you purchase directly from the source at factory prices.

Ooty has been producing artisan handmade chocolates for decades and is now considered the chocolate capital of South India. A factory visit lets you watch the production process from melting couverture chocolate to moulding and wrapping by hand. Popular varieties include walnut fudge, praline assortments, almond brittle and cream-filled chocolates — all excellent gifts to take home.

Avalanche Lake is one of the most unspoilt destinations near Ooty, tucked away in a quiet valley surrounded by thick shola forests and rolling grasslands. The name comes from a massive landslide in 1823. The crystal-clear stream is rich with brown trout, making it popular for fly fishing. The journey is itself spectacular — the road winds through dense eucalyptus groves, misty grasslands and past a trout hatchery.

Pykara is a popular destination about 20 km from Ooty with a river, waterfalls and a serene lake. The Pykara River flows through dense forests before cascading in two stunning waterfalls — the upper and lower falls. The lower falls are more dramatic and accessible. Nearby, Pykara Lake is a peaceful reservoir where you can enjoy motorboat rides with open forest views.

Needle Rock Viewpoint is one of Ooty's most dramatic lesser-known landmarks near Gudalur on the way to Mudumalai. A tall sharp rocky spire rises from the deep forested valley below — hence the name. The viewpoint offers an incredible panorama of the surrounding Nilgiri hills and on clear days you can spot the plains of Kerala and Karnataka far in the distance.
